Edge named 2012 Hall Farmer of the Year

GAINESVILLE - One of Hall County's younger farmers drew the Farmer of the Year award Thursday morning at the 17th annual Agribusiness Awards Breakfast held at the East Hall County Community Center.

The honor went to Payton Edge from Edge Farms, who raises beef cattle, corn, soy beans and hay and expects agriculture to remain the county's number one money maker.

"I see agriculture continuing to grow in Hall County," Edge said. "The chickens are still here and I believe everything in agriculture will do well."

The president of the Georgia Poultry Federation was named Hall County's Friend of Agriculture. Mike Giles was recognized for his expertise on poultry exports and state and federal regulations.

"Agriculture has been my friend my entire life and to be recognized in the community where I now call home as a friend of agriculture is perhaps the most meaningful honor I've ever received," Giles said.

Dori Bishop's Pony Perfect Party is this year's Outstanding Agribusiness. Poultry pioneers Alton Bruce and Homer Wilson were posthumously inducted into the Agribusiness Hall of Fame.
