Statham gets new signs to warn truck drivers

By The Associated Press
STATHAM - Georgia transportation officials say they plan to erect 15 signs in the Statham area directing some trucks away from a railroad intersection where trucks have repeatedly become stuck on the steep grade.

State Department of Transportation spokeswoman Teri Pope says the new signs should be installed by April 11. They will advise trucks with low clearance to take an alternate route.

A truck hauling seven vehicles became stuck on the tracks this month, the latest in a series of such incidents in the northeast Georgia town.

Statham Police Chief Steve Martin says at least one truck gets stuck at the spot ever three or four weeks. He said a truck hauling antique cars became stuck and was hit by a train last year.
