GAINESVILLE - Hall County Commissioners are expected to approve a logo and building sign for what is becoming the Hall County Government Center, formerly the Liberty Mutual Building on Browns Bridge Road.

Commissioner Scott Gibbs said Monday the building needs to be identified as the county's new headquarters.

"We already have staff out there and for marking purposes we've got to make it clear to the public about where they are going," Gibbs said.

The Hall County Elections office has moved into the building and the structure is being renovated to consolidate and hold all of the county's offices.

HIGHER AMBULANCE RATES

Commissioners indicated they would probably approve the ambulance fee increase proposed by Fire Chief David Kimbrell, but they want it to be more competitive with surrounding counties including Gwinnett and Forsyth County. That's what Kimbrell after presenting his rate changes at the Monday work session.

"It's about a 10 percent increase over where we are today," the Chief said.

Kimbrell added Medicare, Medicaid and private insurance shoulders most of the ambulance cost.

FREE SPEECH ISSUE

Hall County Commissioners heard from a frequent meeting visitor who told them their public comment policies are denying free speech rights and they need revision.

Douglas Aiken said his request to speak at the last meeting was denied; he said citizens have the right to speak at meetings with 'no strings attached'.

"I'm asking that you, the Commission, take the necessary steps to allow citizens to address you as outlined in the U.S. Constitution," Aiken said.

Aiken said commission policies require that the speaker inform them of the topic ahead of time and put a two minute time limit on remarks.
