Thousands of dollars missing from Atlanta school PTA account

By The Associated Press
ATLANTA (AP) Authorities say thousands of dollars vanished from the Parent Teacher Association and school foundation at an Atlanta elementary school.

PTA leaders told parents at E. Rivers Elementary School in Buckhead about the thefts at a Tuesday night meeting. The total amount of money involved was unclear, but a budget distributed at the PTA meeting indicated that $53,821 of the funds had been recovered.

School officials sent a letter home to parents Tuesday, saying that someone had diverted funds from some of the school's parents and partner organizations. The money had been intended to go to the school, the PTA or the foundation.

PTA Co-President Elise Lowry reported the missing money to Atlanta police on March 7.
