Call for DOT action at fatal intersection

By Jerry Gunn Reporter
GAINESVILLE - Hall County Commissioners Thursday night called for action on installing a traffic signal at a dangerous intersection north of Gainesville.

That intersection is at Highway 365 and Howard Road the site of at least fifteen accidents since January 10th, several with fatalities, the most recent fatality two days ago. Chairman Tom Oliver made the motion to write a letter to the DOT Commissioner saying Hall would lend staff assistance to get the signal installed.

"We'd be more than willing for them to use our staff and whatever else we could do to expedite it," Oliver said.

Oliver said it's up to the state to pay for and install the traffic light; until there is one he advised motorists to be careful.

GET YOUR DUCKS IN A ROW

A Hall County rezoning applicant who originally wanted to build A-Frame houses for short term rentals changed his mind before the commissioners and tried to drop his request for short term rentals while asking for more square footage per dwelling.

Sonny Bentley withdrew his request after he was advised by Commissioner Billy Powell to go back before the Planning Commission and start over.

"When you do this make sure you've got your ducks in a row, you've got your development plan and everything," Powell said.

The Planning Commission recommended denial and several residents appeared at the meeting ready to oppose Bentley's request. They feared his development would disrupt the neighborhood along Davis Bridge Road at Bert Drive at Lake Lanier.

ALCOHOL REVISIONS NOW LAW

Commissioners also gave final approval to revisions of the county's malt beverage, wine and distilled spirits code which gets regulations in line with state code and paves the way for Sunday sales in the county approved by the voters in March.
Several business owners who are alcohol vendors called on the county to revise the regulations to allow them to be competitive with neighboring cities and counties where alcohol sales are allowed.
