Workers claim racial bias at Gwinnett shelter

By The Associated Press
LAWRENCEVILLE - A report on the Gwinnett County Animal Shelter outlines complaints by animal control officers that racial comments are part of the work culture there.

The shelter's manager and two other employees have left the Gwinnett County Animal Shelter after an internal investigation stemming from a worker's complaint about "a culture of bigotry."

The 108-page report, obtained by the Gwinnett Daily Post and The Atlanta Journal-Constitution, outlines several complaints including one that a top shelter official called President Barack Obama an "(expletive) ape." An employee also said an email circulated around the office comparing First Lady Michelle Obama to an ape.

Gwinnett County police spokesman Jake Smith said that a police lieutenant who was the shelter's supervisor retired in May shortly after being reassigned to another post.
