S.W.A.T. standoff ends when gunman takes his own life

WINDER - An eleven hour standoff in Barrow County came to an end on Monday when the suspect took his own life.

According to Barrow County Sheriff's Lt. Matt Guthas, deputies were dispatched to Rosebud Lane in Winder Monday afternoon in response to a 911 call in which a woman claimed a man who shared their residence was brandishing a gun while making threatening statements toward her and himself.

The suspect, later identified as 32-year-old Jesse Plunkett, refused initial demands to surrender, at which point the situation began to be treated as a barricaded gunman. S.W.A.T. personnel were then dispatched to the scene to aid in the standoff.

An arrest warrant for "simple assault" was obtained by Sheriff's Investigators in response to the initial incident that prompted the 911 call, but negotiations with Plunkett, which lasted the entirety of the standoff, continued to prove unsuccessful.

Sheriff's Investigators then made the decision to execute a search warrant with the intent of safely securing Mr. Plunkett and his firearm.

S.W.A.T. personnel fired tear gas rounds into the home in hopes of persuading Mr. Plunkett to exit the residence of his own accord, but when the suspect did not emerge, determined to make entry into the home.

Upon entering the residence, S.W.A.T. officials found Mr. Plunkett already deceased, apparently the result of a self-inflicted gunshot wound. Authorities did not fire any ammunition during the standoff, with the exception of the tear gas rounds.

The Georgia Bureau of Investigation was called upon to conduct an independent follow-up investigation.

No other details have been released at this time.
