Region 7-AAA may have two front-runners, but there is plenty of time left for upsets and re-shuffling, and this Friday Jacobs Media presents two key showdowns in the race for the 7-AAA title.
Meanwhile, Gainesville will also head on the road in its biggest 8-AAAAA showdown of the season so far, traveling to Athens to face Clarke Central in a game broadcast live on 1240 AM.
This week on 102.9 FM, North Hall will look to keep its record unblemished when the fourth-ranked Trojans trek to Cleveland for a match-up with White County.
North Hall (6-0, 3-0 Region 7-AAA) is coming off a dominating 62-7 win at Fannin County last week, while White County (4-2, 2-1) is looking to bounce back from a 42-6 loss at top-ranked Buford.
The game will feature a showdown of two run-heavy offenses, led by the Trojans' wishbone -- which is averaging 405.2 yards rushing per contest. North Hall is also scoring 51 points per contest.
The Warriors, however, are looking to get their offense back on its scoring track. After averaging 38 points through its first three games of the season, White County has only managed 12 points in the three games since.
In Oakwood, two other 7-AAA foes will battle, each looking to make an impact on the playoff race within the region. West Hall has had a week to refocus after a 63-0 loss to Buford, and the Spartans (4-2, 2-1) know they are still very much in control of their own postseason destiny. Finish strong, and West Hall is assured of its first winning season and state playoff berth since 2002 (the Spartans already have their most wins since 2008, when they went 5-5).
East Hall, meanwhile, is gunning for its first region victory of the campaign. The Vikings (3-3, 0-3) have been within a touchdown in two of their 7-AAA setbacks, and quarterback Devin Watson will lead a dangerous spread attack into Spartan Stadium. The Vikings are averaging 37.8 points per game. West Hall's own offense is scoring 32.5 points per contest and features some big play weapons that the Vikings must contain.
East Hall does not control its own destiny, but with two of the five teams currently above them in the standings still to play, the Vikings can still make plenty of noise in 7-AAA and beyond.
In Athens, fifth-ranked Gainesville faces a Clarke Central team that is also undefeated in region play, and the Red Elephants will look to tighten their grip on the lead for 8-AAAAA. Both teams will bring plenty of athletes to bear in what should be an intriguing contest.
Also in 8-AAAAA, Flowery Branch will look to keep up its own unbeaten run in league play when the Falcons (5-2, 5-0) travel to face Heritage, Conyers (4-3, 3-2). Flowery Branch has not lost a region contest since 2011.
Region 8-AAAA will also feature a huge showdown, as Chestatee travels to take on Lanier in Sugar Hill. The War Eagles (5-1, 3-0 Region 8-AAAA) have won five straight and have not allowed more than a touchdown in its past three contests. The Longhorns (5-1, 2-1) represent Chestatee's toughest league foe so far this season.
Region 8-AA will also contain an intriguing battle, as Rabun County looks to bounce back from last week's 26-20 overtime loss at Jefferson with a showdown at fourth-ranked Washington-Wilkes.
Commerce will also look for a rebound in Region 8-A play, taking on Commerce after the Tigers suffered their first region setback last week against Prince Avenue Christian.
North Forsyth will also face West Forsyth, as the Raiders look to snap a two-game losing skid against their rivals.
It will all make for a huge night of football, and we can't wait.
