Johns Creek man admits hurting infant daughter

By The Associated Press
ATLANTA (AP) A Johns Creek man has been sentenced to 10 years in prison after admitting he severely injured his baby daughter.

Gregory Barnett pleaded guilty to child abuse charges Monday. His lawyer said he was too drunk to remember exactly what happened when the infant was injured in January.

Courtney Johnson, Barnett's ex-girlfriend and the baby's mother, told the judge the injuries left her daughter severely brain-damaged and developmentally disabled.

Prosecutors said Barnett injured the child following an argument with Johnson. Johnson said she left the home because she was scared and returned to find the child with a head injury.

Judge Christopher Brasher said Barnett behaved in a ``selfish and foolish.'' He sentenced Barnett to serve 10 years in prison followed by 10 years on probation.
