Towns, Union County schools delayed by snow, ice

By Staff
UNDATED - The predicted cold front that brought precipitation into north Georgia overnight has spawned snow in at least two mountain counties and has prompted a delay for school.

Towns County schools will open two hours late Tuesday morning. Union County schools have delayed the opening of all Blairsville schools by three hours; Woody Gap School in Suches will be closed all day Tuesday.

The National Weather Service issued an updated special weather statement with the following advice:

A MIX OF RAIN, SLEET, AND SNOW IS LIKELY, BUT PATCHES OF FREEZING RAIN CANNOT BE RULED OUT, BUT MAINLY IN THE HIGHER ELEVATIONS. AT THIS TIME, IT STILL APPEARS WIDESPREAD SURFACE TEMPERATURES WILL REMAIN JUST ABOVE OR ONLY BRIEFLY AROUND FREEZING, AND THIS COUPLED WITH WARM GROUND TEMPERATURES WILL KEEP ANY FROZEN OR FREEZING PRECIPITATION AMOUNTS VERY LIGHT, WITH LITTLE TO NO ACCUMULATION NOW EXPECTED. HOWEVER,PATCHY ICE IS STILL POSSIBLE ON BRIDGES AND OVERPASSES, ESPECIALLY IN THE HIGHER ELEVATIONS. THEREFORE, EXTRA CAUTION IS ADVISED FOR THOSE VENTURING OUT EARLY THIS MORNING.
