Arrest made in Athens hit and run

ATHENS - A 22-year-old man has turned himself in to Athens-Clarke County authorities in connection with a hit and run accident that left a young woman critically injured last month.

Arrest warrants were issued Wednesday for William Heaton. He is accused of striking Emily Bowman, 19, of Woodstock as she walked along Oak Street in Athens. Bowman, a student at Kennesaw State University, had been in Athens celebrating a friend's birthday. Witnesses have said Bowman was walking in a grassy area off the road when she was struck.

At last report, Bowman remained hospitalized in a coma in Athens.

Heaton faces a list of charges, including DUI, in the February 16 accident.

The suspect is scheduled for a first court appearance Thursday.
