WINDER - A middle school teacher from Barrow County has been arrested in connection with a drug deal that possibly lead to the death of a teenage friend.

Barrow County Sheriff's Sgt. Faye Spaulding said in a press statement that Emily Susan Smith, 37, is accused of arranging a drug purchase for the 18-year-old. The teen died at her home on February 14, one day after the purchase.

Spaulding said authorities have not yet confirmed a cause of death for the teen, saying only that there were high levels of a controlled substance in the victim's body.

According to the statement, Smith used her cell phone to coordinate the sale of Xanax and methadone for the teen. The statement said that the victim was supervising Smith's child at the time the pair were coordinating the drug purchase.

Smith faces the following charges in the case: reckless conduct, criminal attempt distribution of a controlled substance, and use of a communication facility in commission of a criminal attempt to distribute a controlled substance.

Smith, who teaches 6th grade math at Winder Barrow Middle School, posted bond, according to the report.

Barrow County schools were on furlough Friday and there was no answer to a phone call placed to the county office for information on Smith's employment status.
