G'ville Council postpones vote on Riverside WTP

By Jerry Gunn Reporter
GAINESVILLE - Gainesville City Council Tuesday night kept its word to homeowners and took no action on an $800,000 upgrade at the Riverside Water Treatment plant.

Councilman Bob Hamrick motioned to remove chemical systems improvements from the agenda. Those improvements include construction of a new chemical building that would be visible in the surrounding residential area.

The plant was built in the early 1950's and the original chemical systems, which use chlorine, have reached their life expectancy. Public Utilities designers are recommending a safer, up to date system.

At last Thursday's work session council members said they wanted input from nearby residents before the project proceeded.

"I would recommend that we remove Item (F) from the agenda," Hamrick said. "Consider it at the next the next meeting or at least until the neighborhood meetings are held."

Hamrick said one neighborhood association was meeting Tuesday night and the water treatment plant changes were up for discussion. Hamrick's motion was seconded and approved unanimously.

PROPERTY SWAP APPROVED

City Council approved a city/county intergovernmental agreement which turns the now vacant second floor of the Joint Administration Building over to the city and the Health Department property on Prior Street over to Hall County.

City Manager Kip Padgett said he's looking at more consolidation.

"We are at some point going to move our planning and HR functions into the Joint Administration Building so that everybody's under one roof," Padgett said.

The Tax Commissioner and Tax Assessors offices moved into the county's new government center on Browns Bridge Road, the former Liberty Mutual Building, last year, leaving the vacant space downtown in the Joint Administration Building, built in the late 1970's

Padgett said the move would leave the Green Street Building vacant across from the old City Hall, but it could be leased. That decision would be up to City Council.
