Busy street paving ahead for Gainesville

By Jerry Gunn Reporter
GAINESVILLE - Gainesville home and business owners may look forward to street and road improvements in what promises to be an active resurfacing season in the city.

City Council, at their Tuesday meeting, approved a resolution that authorizes needed repair work on several streets downtown and in the suburbs according to Public Works engineer Stan Aiken.

This particular project that we're doing has lumped together a couple of different projects," Aiken said. "One is Tommy Aaron Drive with regard to the root damage to that road. We're looking at quite a few roads that are in disrepair that we are going to fix."

A major downtown artery, Washington Street, is on the resurfacing list. It needs repair due to excessive utility cuts and the Public Utilities Department is offering up to $230,000 to fix Washington Street as well as Hillside Drive.

"Washington Street gets repaired from West Academy to Pearl Nix Parkway," Aiken added. "This will include some deep patching to get rid of some problem areas and resurfacing over the top of that, basically a new street."

Portions of Prior Street,North Enota Avenue, Fair Street,High Street,Rosewood Drive, Longstreet Circle, Mulberry Lane,Burns Drive, Beverly Road, Commerce Street and Melody Lane are also on the list in the project totaling an estimated $950,860. That total includes a 10 percent contingency plus $214,132 in Local Maintenance Improvement grant funds.

The lowest acceptable bid out of nine project bids came from Allied Paving Contractors Inc. at $864,418 for a total of approximately two and a half miles of paving to continue well into the summer.
