GAINESVILLE - Gainesville's state Senator Butch Miller recapped the 2013 legislative session and also looked ahead Thursday at a Greater Hall Chamber of Commerce luncheon meeting.
Miller said he supports economic development but despite popular support is not sure doing away with the state income tax is the right path to encourage more industry to locate in Georgia.
"If you lowered the income tax by one percent you're talking about $1.5-billion," Miller said. "People are calling constantly and saying 'get rid of the income tax', but its six percent and if we got rid of six percent of the income tax we've got to come up with $9-billion to replace it. That's half our budget."
Miller said he supports reducing state income tax but it's a future issue that must be approached cautiously.
Miller also said he wants the General Assembly next year to pass legislation that supports post-secondary education.
"You will see us continue to work on post-secondary education, you will especially see us continue to work on technical colleges," the Senator said. "The technical colleges are key to our growth."
Miller added he wants legislation to make public colleges and technical schools more affordable and accessible, adding that even though the Board of Regents approved a two percent tuition increase this week, higher education in Georgia is still a bargain.
