GA high court upholds conviction for former deputy

ATLANTA (AP)- Georgia's highest court has upheld the convictions of a former sheriff's deputy in the killings of his wife and a day laborer he had hired.

Former DeKalb County sheriff's deputy Derrick Yancey was convicted in 2010. Yancey told authorities he shot Marcial Puluc in self-defense in June 2008. Yancey said the Guatemalan day laborer had shot his wife, Lynda Yancey, while stealing money from her.

In an opinion published Monday, the Georgia Supreme Court unanimously upheld the lower court ruling and rejected all of Yancey's arguments challenging his conviction.

Investigators who analyzed the crime scene and the forensic evidence determined that Yancey's story about what had happened was inconsistent with the physical and forensic evidence from the scene. Investigators determined Yancey shot both his wife and Puluc.
