UNDATED - The U.S. Drought Monitor in its last report on April 30 indicated only a very small area of Georgia close to the coast remained abnormally dry. By Thursday, when the next map is posted, even that dry spot should be erased.
State Climatologist Pam Knox said Monday the U.S. Drought Monitor, which is the official archive of drought across the country, still shows Georgia with 1.5% of the state still in drought.
"That's just a little sliver near Brunswick," said Knox.
She said that area of the state received about two and one-half inches of rain over the weekend, so that should erase the drought completely once new measurements are taken.
Knox said the rest of the state really began a dramatic switch from drought conditions at the end of January.
"[That's] when we started getting all of these rains, first in the northern part of the state, and then over February they moved farther to the south," said Knox.
In fact, said Knox, February set a new record for rainfall amounts statewide, breaking the old record by a couple of inches.
