Boating incident mars otherwise safe weekend on Lanier

By B.J. Williams
UNDATED - Despite an incident that injured two people on a Sea-Doo late Friday night, Lake Lanier was a relatively safe place to spend Memorial Day weekend, according to authorities with the State Department of Natural Resources.

DNR spokeswoman Melissa Cummings reported that of the 39 boating under the influence citations issued statewide, 39 of those were issued on Lake Lanier during the course of the three-day weekend.

Cummings said there were no boating-related fatalities, but there were two boating incidents.

"One of those incidents was the one that many people have heard about with the hit and run around Friday on midnight...that left two people off that Sea-Doo injured," said Cummings.

An 18-year-old boater has turned himself in in connection with that incident; there has been no word yet from the DNR on charges.

The second incident on Lanier involved a houseboat that was struck at Holiday Marina sometime Sunday night or early Monday morning. Cummings said she did not have many details on that incident. She said the owner of the houseboat awoke to find damage to the vessel. No one was hurt in that incident.

While there were no drownings on Lanier, Cummings said there were two drownings in other parts of the state, one in the Augusta Canal and one in a private pond in Coffee County.

"That is still two too many," said Cummings. "However, that's certainly a number that went down from last year's total."
