GAINESVILLE - Gainesville area moms, dads and their youngsters got an American Civil War history lesson free of charge from the Northeast Georgia History Center at Brenau University Sunday.

Education and Volunteer Coordinator Julie Carson said Family Day, held several times each year, offers visitors a chance to not only see, but feel and even taste history.

"It's a time for people to enjoy some time together while having fun and learning about the Northeast Georgia area," Carson said. "They get to come in free of charge and participate in hands-on activities, view exhibits and also see folks in action demonstrating something from the past."

Those exhibits included living historians portraying Union and Confederate soldiers, ladies in period dress with 1860's fashions and fabrics, and food prepared over an open fire made from Civil War camp recipes.

Young visitors learned Civil War soldier drill and how musket cartridges were made while their parents and grandparents learned about quilting from living historians at the Chief White Path cabin. Carson said it also gave them a chance to see what the History Center has to offer.

"We have an unbelievable array of exhibits; our galleries start with the Cherokee and Creek Indians through present day events," Carson added. "Whatever we have for a Family Day theme reflects something that's part of our exhibits and part of our history."

Carson said Civil War Day at the History Center observed the 150th anniversary of the mid-19th century conflict between North and South and its impact on Northeast Georgia.

"There are activities and events going on throughout the state to commemorate that very significant period in Southern history," according to Carson. "People have a keen interest in the Civil War."
