CLEVELAND - The White County Board of Education Thursday night gave unanimous approval to the FY-2014 budget that calls for a $33 million general fund with a total overall budget of $46 million.
The approved budget calls for a 0.9 mill roll up, but school officials said with the lower county property values, it will mean no real tax increase.
"We'd love to have it where we didn't roll up anything, but we have had so many cuts and we've reduced our staff tremendously. Our teachers are still under furlough days, and this was a way that we could keep the existing staff we have. We're still feeling a crunch here," school board chair Kendyl Brock-Hunter said.
She said officials hope property values will recover, resulting in a roll back.
Superintendent Dr. Jeff Wilson said in working on the spending plan, the school system had to deal with a $1 million increase in insurance costs and a 6 percent decline in the tax digest.
He said no new teachers will be added. In fact they'll start the new year with eight to ten fewer educators.
