Flowery Branch officials keeping close eye on weather

By B.J. Williams
FLOWERY BRANCH - So far, so good in the city of Flowery Branch where Mayor Mike Miller declared a State of Emergency Wednesday evening ahead of heavy rains in the area.

Miller said issuing the emergency declaration allowed the city to quickly allow for the construction of a temporary bridge on Spring Street, which was heavily damaged by floods two months ago.

He said it does something else.

"It also allows us, if something were to give way along Spring Street there and we needed to mandate an evacuation of the apartment complex there, that we could go ahead with that," Miller said.

He said the temporary bridge over Spring Street is now in place.

"That should shore us up there and, the plan is for that to be in place there for about two months."

Miller said law enforcement continues to keep an eye on culverts in the city, making sure they all hold steady with more rain expected.

He said about an inch of rain fell in Flowery Branch Wednesday night, which was far less than had been predicted. The state of emergency declaration remained in place.

"I talked to some folks south of the city in Gwinnett County that got almost three and a half inches overnight."

Cantrell Street over Flowery Branch Creek remains closed as rain is forecast to continue into Friday.
