10 killed in Georgia holiday weekend crashes

ATLANTA (AP) Georgia State Patrol officials say 10 people were killed in crashes during the July Fourth holiday travel period.

State troopers say they investigated 785 traffic crashes that resulted in 374 injuries during the holiday travel period, which began at 6 p.m. Wednesday and ended Sunday at midnight.

Officials say traffic fatalities were reported by law enforcement agencies throughout the state, including police departments in Atlanta and Fulton County. No fatalities were reported in the north Georgia area.

Aside from the crashes and fatalities, state patrol officials say more than 300 people were arrested for driving under the influence during the holiday travel period.

Authorities say they conducted more than 16,600 traffic stops during the holiday travel period.
