Young Hall Firefighter gets big award

By Jerry Gunn Reporter
GAINESVILLE - A Hall County Firefighter/EMT trainee, inspired by his life-saving act in November, 2011 to become an emergency responder, received the prestigious Carnegie Hero Award during Thursday night's county commission meeting.

Hall County Commissioner Billy Powell said in the county's commendation proclamation that Tray Ross, a plant worker at the time, risked his life to save the occupant of a burning house in Gainesville across the street.
Ross, in his Hall Firefighter's uniform, invited fellow trainees up front for the presentation.

"I'm just here working for Hall County and looking forward to better things and becoming a fire fighter and EMT for my county," Ross said.

Fire Services Chief David Kimbrell said Ross was half finished with his basic training. Kimbrell presented his young trainee with the Carnegie Foundation medal and a lapel pin.

"There are only 9,500 that have been given since the award was started in the early 1900's," Kimbrell said. "We're fortunate that Tray is one of those. There are four that have been given to Gainesville residents, so Tray joins an elite group and we're very proud that he is a Hall County Firefighter, along with these other guys."
