Hall's washout costs are adding up

By Jerry Gunn Reporter
GAINESVILLE - Hall County's fire service, The Sheriff's Department, and public works employees got a pat on the back from county commissioners Monday on restoring the weekend washout at C. Rogers Road in North Hall County, but those spring and summer washouts are costing plenty.

Public Works Director Ken Rearden said that repair and replacement cost is adding up. The May 19th storm washouts cost the county around $758,000. Saturday's damage to C. Rogers Road just added to the cost.

"We think this one will be somewhere in the neighborhood of between $70,000 and $100,000," Rearden said. "We're approaching $1-million in damage just from this year's storms."

Rearden added that in his five years as Public Works Director, he's never seen storm damage this heavy.

"I've never seen any damage to this effect," Rearden recalled. "It has been the wettest summer I've experienced."

Just after 3:00 p.m. Saturday, C. Rogers Road was washed out due to localized flooding from the heavy rain, isolating about 100 families according to Sheriff's reports. County public safety agencies went to work immediately assisting those who were cut-off due to the road closure. The Sheriff's Office used its dive boat to ferry residents from Clarks Bridge Park to a private boat dock at the end of the road.

Fire Marshall Scott Cagle said the road was re-opened at around 1:30 A.M. Sunday after crews repaired the damage.
