CLEVELAND - The White County Board of Education thinks it has a solution to a meal plan problem that has been costing the system thousands of dollars.
The school refuses to deny any student food who cannot afford a meal; however, the practice has resulted in some students overdrawing accounts as much as $900. At one point, overdue accounts reached over $16,000 total.
School Nutrition Director Abby Rowland tried to encourage parents to pay their overdue fines, but she said "There was no incentive to pay and they would not fill out free and reduced meal applications."
Rowland asked the school board to approve an alternate meal for students whose accounts have hit negative - a cheese sandwich, fruit and other items - at Thursday's policy and procedure changes meeting.
Several avenues will be used to notify parents of the change of policy. The board pointed out that at no time should any child be denied a meal.
The board also discussed employee sick leave policy and out of county tuition at the meeting.
