GAINESVILLE - A new elementary school for the city of Gainesville won't open until August of 2017, but city school officials are already laying the groundwork with the community.
Gainesville City Schools Superintendent Merrianne Dyer, who was joined by School Board Member Dr. Delores Diaz and other city school officials, spoke Thursday evening to a group of parents, community members and teachers about the development timeline for a new elementary school in the Mundy Mill development on the west side of the city.
"This is similar to when we prepared to build Gainesville and New Holland [elementary schools]," said Dyer. "We started two years in advance...we did the magnet programs and then the faculties chose where they wanted to go. So, we're going back to those notes."
Mundy Mill School, which will have a new name once a planning team puts the pieces together, should be funded by e-SPLOST dollars, if all goes as planned.
Dyer said the opening of the new school can't come soon enough.
"The plans we currently have, if they're not altered or new ones are used, house 650," said Dyer. "From the neighborhoods - the four main neighborhoods surrounding Mundy Mill - we would have the school right now."
Since Gainesville is a charter school system that means students from outside those neighborhoods could elect to attend the new school, as well.
The Thursday meeting was the first where school officials not only could gauge parental interest in development plans for the school, but also could see which teachers in the system might be interested in working at the Mundy Mill school.
According to the schedule distributed at the meeting, the next step in the school development is to finalize a Parent-School Planning Team, which will meeting for the first time in January.
