GAINESVILLE -- Friday night proved just what the doctor ordered for Gainesville football.
After suffering a setback last week in a showdown with Buford, the Red Elephants let it be known they are not about to let it get them down, pounding Winder-Barrow 68-0 in Gainesville.
The game included a milestone for standout senior quarterback Deshaun Watson, who went over 10,000 yards passing for his career in the early moments. The only signal caller in state history to surpass 10,000, Watson finished the night with 307 yards through the air, completing 18 of 26 attempts.
Watson and back-up Mikey Gonzalez -- who passed for 167 yards on 12 of 16 attempts -- spread the wealth, as the Red Elephants (2-1, 1-0 Region 8-AAAAA) saw seven different receivers catch passes, including Rodney Lackey (7 catches, 114 yards, TD), Michael Byrd (7 catches, 105 yards) and Jay Gaudlock (4 catches, 98 yards, 2 TDs).
Byrd also carried eight times for 90 yards and a score in the win.
Chastin Newman, Josh Holderfield and Mesiah Dorsey also scored in the win, while Chris Williamson caught three passes for 78 yards.
Gainesville will look to keep its winning ways going next week at Apalachee.
