New adjustable speed limit signs in place on I-285

By The Associated Press
ATLANTA (AP) A new system of adjustable speed limits is in place on the northern end of the freeway that encircles Atlanta.

State transportation officials say the new electronic signs on the northern portion of Interstate 285 will adjust the speed limit according to traffic and weather patterns. They say the top limit will be 65 mph, but can be adjusted down to 35 mph depending on conditions.

Authorities say the idea is to warn motorists and slow traffic when there is heavy congestion or problems on the freeway, so drivers aren't slamming on brakes and causing secondary crashes.

The Atlanta Journal-Constitution reports that the new electronic signs are along the interstate in Fulton, DeKalb and Cobb counties.
