ROBINS AIR FORCE BASE, Ga. (AP) Officials at Robins Air Force Base in central Georgia say an airman from the base is dead and two others are still missing in Okinawa, Japan, after high waves from a powerful typhoon swept the three U.S. servicemen out to sea.
Officials at the Georgia base said in a statement Monday that the airmen were on temporary duty at Kadena Air Base in Japan, and were visiting the coast when the waves carried them into the ocean.
The Air Force said the search for the two missing airmen had been interrupted by rough seas.
Robins officials did not identify the airmen or release their hometowns, saying that relatives were still being notified.
Okinawa is home to about half of the roughly 50,000 American troops stationed in Japan.
