ST. SIMONS ISLAND, Ga. (AP) Volunteers are cleaning up St. Simons Island after a sprawling beach party the night before the Georgia-Florida football showdown.
The Florida Times-Union reports local officials estimated as many as 10,000 people, many of them University of Georgia students, crammed a half-mile stretch of beach Friday to celebrate before heading to the game in Jacksonville, Florida, on Saturday.
County workers started using front-end loaders to collect garbage as soon as police began clearing the beach Friday night. More than 100 volunteers were scheduled to help clean up the rest Saturday.
Some said the Friday crowd appeared to be the largest ever for St. Simons' annual pre-game party. Halloween added some extra color, with some party goers dressed as bananas, pizza, Roman soldiers and a giraffe.
