ATLANTA (AP) Republican Sam Olens has won his race for re-election as Georgia's attorney general.
Early returns Tuesday showed Olens defeated Democrat Greg Hecht, a Jonesboro attorney and former state lawmaker. Olens will now serve a second term as Georgia's top lawyer.
Olens and Hecht sparred during the campaign over gay marriage. Hecht promised that if elected, he would drop any defense of the ban on same-sex marriages in Georgia, saying he's concluded the ban is unconstitutional after similar statutes have been struck down in other states. Olens said it's his duty to defend Georgia's ban against legal challenges as long as it hasn't been thrown out by the courts.
Olens raised a hefty $3.4 million to protect his seat, compared to Hecht's $534,100.
