FORT STEWART, Ga. (AP) About 200 members of the 3rd Infantry Division based at Fort Stewart will be heading to the Middle East for a yearlong deployment supporting operations in Afghanistan.
The Savannah Morning News reported Friday that Maj. Gen. Mike Murray will be leading the group that will largely be based at Bagram Airfield in Afghanistan. The group will primarily be responsible for troops' logistics and administrative functions as well as providing protection around the airfield.
The deployment comes as the U.S. will be scaling back its troops and shutting down bases as the NATO-led Operation Enduring Freedom winds down and is transitioned to a scaled-back Resolute Support Mission.
