Procession carrying Sanders' body stops at Capitol

By The Associated Press
ATLANTA (AP) A funeral procession carrying the body of former Georgia Gov. Carl Sanders was heading to Augusta after making a final visit to the state Capitol in Atlanta.

Sanders fell at his home Friday and died Sunday at age 89.

Sanders, a Democrat, was governor from 1963 to 1967 after terms in the state House of Representatives and state Senate. He was the state's 74th governor.

The procession stopped at the Capitol Wednesday morning on its way to Sanders' native Augusta for a private burial, The Atlanta Journal-Constitution reported (http://on-ajc.com/11ibVhj ).

A memorial service in Atlanta is planned for 11 a.m. Saturday at the Second Ponce de Leon Baptist Church, Gov. Nathan Deal said. Sanders' family has asked that donations be made to the Metropolitan YMCA or University of Georgia Law School, the governor said.

Sanders was known for his role in the Civil Rights movement. He took quiet steps to eliminate segregation in state offices, and ordered the removal of signs designating water fountains and bathrooms by race at the state Capitol. That action came at the prompting of Georgia's first elected black state senator, Leroy Johnson.

Sanders also shaped Georgia's education system, overseeing the creation of minimum standards for public schools, the addition of 10,000 teachers and development of an honors program for high-performing students.

After leaving office, Sanders founded Troutman Sanders law firm in Atlanta. The firm grew to more than 600 attorneys with offices throughout the U.S. and in Asia under his leadership.
