JEFFERSON -- Jefferson football saw a semifinal berth slip just beyond its grasp on Friday night, as Blessed Trinity edged out a tense, 28-21 overtime victory in the Class AAA quarterfinals in Jefferson.
The Dragons (12-1) fought back from a second quarter deficit to force overtime but could not answer the Titans' score on its first play from scrimmage in the extra frame.
The loss brought to an end a strong season for Jefferson, which saw the Dragons march into the quarterfinals for a third straight campaign.

"I'm proud of the way my team played tonight," Dragons coach Ben Hall said. "At the end they made a play and we didn't."

In overtime, Titans quarterback Conor Davis found Patrick Jasinski for his third touchdown pass of the night and then watched his defense hold the Dragons out of the end zone on their possession to clinch the win.

"It was a good season; it hurts now, but tonight we're going to celebrate our seniors," Hall said. "Our young kids are resilient, and they'll bounce back. But tonight's about our seniors."

Jefferson fought back time and again during the contest, knotting the score at 7-7 in the second quarter and 21-21 in the third quarter.

Sammy Williams scored the Dragons' first, a 13-yard scamper that made it 7-7 with 10:18 left before halftime. The run was part of an offensive explosion in the period that saw Blessed Trinity's Milton Shelton score from a yard out and Davis hit Matthew Higgins for two touchdown passses and a 21-7 lead.

"We got ourselves in a hole there in the first half, and we didn't make plays that we had been making all season," Hall said.

Evan Shirreffs helped Jefferson strike back, connecting with Rodney Carr for a 41-yard scoring strike to pull the Dragons within 21-14 with 57 seconds left in the half.

Jefferson then pulled even when Shirreffs found Carr again in the third quarter, this time for 22 yards. The senior quaretrback finished the night completing 19 of 30 passes for 229 yards -- seven of those completions going to Carr for 81 yards. TJ Skelton also hauled in six passes for 120 yards.

Jefferson even out-gained Blessed Trinity 349-252 but could not find the killer drive or play down the stretch -- including a field goal attempt that Blessed Trinity blocked.
Both defenses controlled the final 12 minutes, sending the game into overtime where Blessed Trinity's offense found its spark. The Titans defense then broke up a Dragons pass at the goal line on fourth and 7 to seal the win.
