Guilty plea in Ebola scare at Georgia jail

By The Associated Press
MARIETTA, Ga. (AP) Prosecutors say a Virginia man who caused an Ebola scare at a Georgia county jail has pleaded guilty to making false statements and DUI.

Cobb County District Attorney's spokeswoman Kim Isaza said in a statement Thursday that 35-year-old Harry Randall Withers Jr. of Suffolk, Virginia admitted to telling a paramedic he had recently traveled to Nigeria and Kenya after he was arrested for drunken driving.

Prosecutors say he told local health officials the same thing and prompted a disease containment response.

Authorities determined Withers hadn't traveled to Africa and doesn't have a passport.

Withers has been given a 10-year sentence, with one year to serve. Prosecutors say that sentence will be suspended if Withers completes a six-month rehabilitation program in Virginia and pay $10,000 in restitution.
