Mayor says Kennesaw leaders want to change mosque vote

By The Associated Press
KENNESAW, Ga. (AP) In an abrupt reversal, Kennesaw's mayor says all four council members who voted to deny a mosque's permit to open in a strip mall have told him they now want to change their decision.

Mayor Mark Mathews tells The Marietta Daily Journal that the four council members who voted to deny a permit for the Suffa Dawat Center approached him privately to tell him they'd changed their minds.

Matthews conveyed what the four council members had told him during a Wednesday night council meeting.

Now, if the city council on Monday opts to vote again, Matthews says the mosque's application would be approved.

The city council last week voted 4-1 against the request. About 10 protesters had gathered before the vote, waving American flags and signs saying ``no mosque.''
