By The Associated Press
LAWRENCEVILLE, Ga. (AP) The board of Georgia's largest school system has approved some new schools and attendance zones in a plan that's expected to involve more than 13,000 students.

The Gwinnett County school board on Thursday night approved the plan to redraw the attendance areas to relieve crowding at some existing schools.

Board members made some modifications to their original plan, which will allow some students to transfer to schools they want with "permissible transfers."

Among the changes: The district plans to open a new high school on Old Norcross Road.

School system spokesperson Sloan Roach said that some students in the Berkmar and Central Gwinnett high school zones would attend the new high school under the plan.

Gwinnett County includes several of Atlanta's growing northeastern suburbs.
