9 arrested on 1st night of Savannah festival

By The Associated Press
SAVANNAH, Ga. (AP) - Savannah-Chatham Metropolitan Police say they made nine arrests during the first night of the 2014 St. Patrick's Day Festival in Savannah.

Police said on Saturday that five of the arrests from the previous night involved public urination, and others led to charges of disorderly conduct, simple battery and obstruction. They said one arrest was made on River Street and the others were made in the ``festival zone'' stretching from Bay Street to Jones Street.

Thousands of party goers are in Savannah to celebrate St. Patrick's Day.

The St. Patrick's Day parade, which will be held on Sunday, is a 190-year-old tradition. It was started by Irish immigrants to the Georgia coast in 1824.
