GAINESVILLE - Gainesville police said a badly decomposed body was discovered Wednesday afternoon on Chestnut Street off Martin Luther King, Jr. Boulevard.

Police Cpl. Kevin Holbrook said authorities received a 911 call around 5:30 p.m. Wednesday from a person who made the discovery at the dead end of Chestnut Street.

"Upon arrival, police investigators did find deceased, decomposed human remains," said Holbrook.

He said there was no way to determine whether the remains were those of a male or female, nor was there clear evidence of how the person died.

An autopsy was being performed on the body Thursday morning.

"[That] can take anywhere from a few hours up to a couple of weeks," said Holbrook.
