LULA - Hall County firefighters started the new year battling a house fire on Grove Street in Lula.

Fire Marshal Scott Cagle said three adults were home when the fire broke out and told authorities they had tried for about a half hour to extinguish the fire themselves before calling 9-1-1 just before 6 a.m.

"None of the occupants were injured in the fire, which of course, was a good thing - no injuries to our firefighters said Cagle. "It does appear to be accidental in nature, starting around the stove area of the kitchen."

Cagle said the residents told firefighters they had been having electrical problems in the house, and they reported the stove would turn on an off by itself.

Fire damage was contained to the kitchen area, according to Cagle, but the 1,200 square foot house sustained smoke damage throughout.

Cagle said the power company turned off power to the house as a precaution, so the house is unlivable. The residents of the home will be staying with relatives.
