School board member refuses the district's background check

By The Associated Press
DECATUR, Ga. (AP) DeKalb County school officials say a newly-elected school board member is refusing to submit to a fingerprint and background check the district does on board members, employees and volunteers.

Board member Stan Jester says he will only submit to a fingerprint and background check done by the DeKalb County Police Department -- not the school district.

Jester tells WSB-TV that undergoing the school system's security check is a conflict of interest.

DeKalb County School Board Chairman Melvin Johnson says he was surprised when Jester informed him of his decision. Jester is scheduled to be sworn in Monday.

Jester says he has made arrangements to have his fingerprints taken by DeKalb County police, though it wasn't clear whether police would conduct the same background check as school officials do.
