GAINESVILLE — Riverside Military Academy got its first victory for head coach Kelly Davis Friday night with a 21-7 win Strong Rock Christian at Maginnis Field.
The defense caused five urnovers, including a fumble midway through the fourth quarter that Javon Thompson scooped up and raced 96 yards to seal the win.
Riverside (1-4, 0-1 Region 8-AA) trailed 7-0 late into the second quarter when a 31-yard pass from Chandler Jones to Darrien Herring with 37 seconds left in the half tied the game going into halftime.
It stayed that way until midway through the fourth quarter when Jones recovered his own bobbled snap on the goalline, raced to the sideline, and before being sacked, hook shot the ball sideways to a wide open Thompson, who cashed it in for the go-ahead score with 7:34 left in the game.
Jones finished 8-for-11 passing for 115 yards, two touchdowns, and one interception for Riverside. Kaseem Duke had 18 rushes for 111 yards, Thompson had four receptions for 60 yards, and Herring added three catches for 47 yards for the Eagles
Riverside will jump back its Region 8-AA schedule next week traveling to winless Washington-Wilkes.
