GAINESVILLE — Hall County educators are working on a plan that will allow graduates of the county school system to earn a bilingual seal on their diplomas.
The idea is that the seal will prompt students to become proficient in more than one language, giving them more college and career opportunities.
At a Monday night meeting, Hall County School Board members approved a request from Carrie Woodcock, the International Language Coordinator for the Hall County School District, to allow a team of educators to formulate criteria for the diploma seal.
"What we would like to propose is that we here in Hall County recognize and honor our students who have worked hard to maintain and acquire...a certain level of proficiency in listening, speaking, reading and writing two languages - English must be one of those," said Woodcock.
Once the team of educators formulates criteria for the seal, then the plan would come before the Board for approval.
Assistant Superintendent Eloise Barron said the school system has a five-year goal.
"We would like to see a third of our students graduate with a bilingual seal - that would be our goal," said Barron following the Monday night meeting.
