Gainesville shooting suspect pleads guilty; ordered to prison for 15 years

By Ken Stanford Contributing Editor

GAINESVILLE - A Gainesville man, accused of wounding two women during a shooting at Atlanta Street Apartments last year, has been sentenced to 15 years in prison after pleading guilty.

According to court documents, Antwan Xavier Earls, 25, was also ordered to serve 15 years on probation.  Earls pleaded guilty to aggravated assault, admitting to Hall County Superior Court Judge Andrew Fuller that he shot and wounded the pair August 15, 2014, outside the southside apartment complex.

A Gainesville Police Department spokesman said following Earls' arrest that people in the area of the shooting played a key role in his capture.

"This case is a prime example of Community Oriented Policing; the community played a vital role in apprehending the shooter," Corporal Kevin Holbrook said.  "The community provided officers and investigators with information that subsequently led them to Earls as the shooter. It is important in cases of this nature that we, the police department and the citizens work together to combat crime and violence to ensure safety for everyone in our community."
