Gainesville police officer injured when patrol car hits a pole

By Bryan Pirkle Reporter

GAINESVILLE -A single-vehicle accident involving an officer with the Gainesville Police Department (GPD) shut down E.E. Butler Parkway at Jesse Jewell Parkway for several hours early Sunday.

According to GPD Sgt. Kevin Holbrook, an unidentified officer traveling down E.E. Butler Sunday morning apparently veered off the roadway and struck a pole.

"The early indicators appear that there may have been...some type of vehicle malfunction," he said. "Something to cause the vehicle to run off the roadway and strike the pole."

The officer was transported from the scene to Northeast Georgia Medical Center. Holbrook said the officer's condition was unknown at the time.

Holbrook said the roadway was shut down by authorities while a preliminary investigation was conducted.

"The Georgia Sate Patrol is investigating the accident because it did involve a Gainesville police officer."
