CLEVELAND - The White County Board of Commissioners has taken steps to make improvements to a dangerous section of Asbestos Road north of Cleveland. <br />

On Monday, commissioners approved widening the inside curve at the intersection of Mauldin Road and on the east side of Asbestos Road. <br />
<br />
That curve has been described as the most dangerous part of the road because of a sharp curve, narrow road and some sight issues. Several traffic accidents, including a fatal crash in 2011 that killed a Hiawassee man, have happened in that location. <br />
<br />
Back in August, commissioners approved funding to pave the section of Asbestos Road from Joe Black Road to Alternate 75, and felt this was the best time to make the improvement. <br />
<br />
Public Works Director Terry Palmer said the county will wait until at least April because warmer weather is needed for the paving. <br />
<br />
According to Palmer, two feet will be added to the roadway on the inside curve, then the centerline will be moved over the give an extra foot for each driver to maneuver the curve. <br />
<br />
Commissioners approved the use of $7,000 in Special Purpose Local Option Sales Tax funds to do the widening work. <br />
