Guardrails will be installed within two weeks at White County bridge

By Dean Dyer WRWH Radio

CLEVELAND - Safety guardrails should be installed at the bridge on  controversial Gene Nix Road in White County within the next two weeks.

That’s the word from White County Commission Chairman Travis Turner, who said Monday afternoon he had just received word that the engineering reports on the proper placement of  guardrails should be completed  this Wednesday.

Since two White County teens were killed last month when their car ran off the road and plunged into Town Creek, there has been a call for guardrails to be placed around the bridge.

On Sunday, Shannon Hamilton, the father of one of the teens, was arrested and charged with interference with government  property when he attempted to place gravel berms at the bridge.

Turner announced on March 30 that the county would be installing the guardrails and he said the commission board has stressed to staff to get this project done ASAP, but noted first the engineering work had to be done.

"The guardrail company that we use has stated they will not put up guardrails until that engineering report was finalized, and it’s suppose to be finalized Wednesday," Turner said.

Even with temporary barriers, Turner said they must have a study to determine exactly where to locate them.

Once they receive the report Wednesday Turner said they will work with the guardrail company to get the work done as soon as possible.

Additional signage will be installed in the area as well. Turner said.
