ATLANTA (AP) Tuition is going up for Georgia students the state's 30 public colleges and universities.

The Georgia University System's board approved the rates at a meeting Tuesday. In-state students at Georgia Tech will see the biggest increase, up $405 per semester. That's a 9 percent increase.

University of Georgia tuition is going up by the same rate, an additional $387 per semester.

Georgia State University and Georgia Regents University will see a 5.5 percent increase, around $220.

Students at six other schools will see increases ranging from 3 to 9 percent.  The rate at the University of North Georgia will increase five percent, while at Georgia Gwinnet College, the increase will be 8.3 percent.

Board members approved a 2.5 percent increase at the state's remaining public colleges and universities. Tuition has gone up each year since at least 2002.

System officials say the higher increases at research institutions are due to higher expenses.

“To ensure we can continue to offer quality public higher education, we must continue to invest in our institutions,” said Chancellor Hank Huckaby. “We have carefully assessed the tuition rates for our institutions to make sure we are balancing the increasing costs of providing public higher education while keeping tuition and fees as affordable as possible.”
