Fast-food workers, others rally in push for higher pay

COLLEGE PARK, Ga. (AP) Fast-food workers rallied in College Park and planned another demonstration in Atlanta as they and others across the nation call for the federal minimum wage to be raised to $15.

Organizers say they chose April 15 -- tax day -- to demonstrate because they want the public to know that many low-wage workers must rely on public assistance to make ends meet.

In Georgia, protesters rallied in College Park at 6 a.m. Wednesday. They planned another demonstration at 5 p.m. at Clark Atlanta University.

Nationwide, the Fight for $15 campaign is being spearheaded by the Service Employees International Union and began in late 2012 with fast-food workers. Since then, organizers have used the spotlight to rally a variety of low-wage workers, including airport workers, home care workers and adjunct professors.
