ATLANTA - Following a recent document seizure, the FBI believes there may be numerous Gainesville area victims of an investment fraud scheme.
The case involves the February 12, FBI arrest of 64-year-old Elmer Swain Stewart of Cleveland. He faces federal charges of wire fraud, according to Special Agent in Charge (SAC) J. Britt Johnson of the FBI in Atlanta.
The scheme involves investment money Stewart allegedly took for non-existent timber rights and real estate deals, according to Johnson.
The recently seized documents indicate there are further victims who may be unaware of Stewart's arrest and its potential tie to their business dealings with him. According to the FBI, the unidentified victims live primarily in the Gainesville area.
The FBI requested potential victims or anyone with information on the case contact the FBI Atlanta Field Office at (404) 679-9000.
